Mature Students

Perhaps you are studying a maths qualification as an adult and would benefit from support. Maybe you want to help your children with their maths homework, or maybe you’re home schooling, and could use some revision. You may need to pass a maths test for work. Perhaps you have struggled with maths in the past and would like to improve your skills.

Whatever your situation, I can help you with the maths you need for specific purposes or in general everyday life. We will work together to identify the ways you learn best (you may already know them) and build on the skills you already have. Tuition will be tailored to the work you need to do in the way that works best for you.

I was also a mature student. I returned to education in my twenties having left school aged 16, and self-studied for AS Maths alongside my Access to Higher Education course. I accessed support for my self-study from a tutor in a drop-in maths workshop. Thanks Joe! I went on to gain a First Class Honours degree. (B.Ed, main subject Mathematics)

Depending on your situation, tuition may include:

  • Finding out how you learn best
    • learning styles and other factors
  • Exploring and addressing barriers to learning
  • Using your strengths
  • Building on the maths skills you already have
    • even if you’re not aware of them
  • Developing your confidence
  • Increasing your understanding and skills
  • Identifying the maths you need for your particular situation
  • Teaching topics
  • Suggesting resources for you to work from
  • Calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
  • Fractions, decimals, percentages
  • Ratio and proportion
  • Algebra / Geometry / Graphs / Statistics
  • Making links between topics
  • Identifying the right method for the question
  • Problem-solving
  • Using a calculator (including shortcuts)
  • Not using a calculator
  • Mental maths
  • The maths your children may need help with
    • and how it relates to the methods you know
  • Maths for your professional or other requirements
  • And probably other things I haven’t thought of here
  • The Maths you need, in the ways that work best for you

You want to help your children with their maths homework, but…

  • You haven’t studied maths for a long time and need some revision
  • They learn different methods from the ones you did at school
  • You don’t feel confident enough in your own maths skills
  • There seem to be new maths topics these days
  • Some other reason…

I can work with you on any or all of these issues, making links between the maths you know and the methods your child has been taught (or may learn in the future). We can use resources designed for school students, teachers, or adult learners of maths, or a combination. As always, tuition is tailored to the work you need and the ways you learn best.

Don’t Panic!

  • I have worked with students of all ages who were afraid of maths; hence the name “Maths – Don’t Panic!”
  • Increasing your confidence with maths, and lessening the fear, will help you learn more easily as well as making maths lessons more comfortable.
  • Finding out how you learn best, including how you think, can be an important part of this.
  • I have long experience with neurodiversity (including my own), and with specific learning difficulties.
  • Everyone is different so it makes sense that we learn in different ways. There are many reasons for these differences, and many implications for the learning of mathematics.
  • These factors don’t stop you learning maths; we just need to work in the ways that suits you best.
  • If you are an experienced learner and already know the best ways for you to learn, just tell me!
  • If you’re still exploring how you learn, or if you’ve never thought about it before, we can work on this together as part of the tuition.
  • You can find out more about the factors affecting maths learning on the “Neurodiversity” page.
