KS2/KS3

School students in KS2 or KS3 may want ongoing support with maths, or just a few sessions to catch up on work missed or to make sense of a difficult topic. Perhaps you could do with extra help after the disruptions of the last two years. There may be other reasons why you find Maths difficult, which we can work on together. You may be moving from Primary to Secondary school and want a head start on KS3 maths. You may need support understanding topics and answering questions, or you may be aiming for a high GCSE grade and want to focus on the most difficult Maths.

I am a flexible and supportive tutor, always aiming to make maths lessons both enjoyable and productive. I use a wide range of learning materials including practical resources, mathematical games, computer software and paper-based work.

With younger students, the first session will include a consultation with both the student and a parent/carer to identify priorities for tuition and preferred ways of working. Whatever your situation, tuition will be tailored to the work you need to cover and the way you learn best. Please contact me to discuss your tuition needs.

Tuition may include:

  • Finding out how you learn best
    • which ways of working you like (or don’t like)
    • exploring how you think about Maths
    • learning styles
    • anything specific which affects the way you learn
    • any other factors
  • Using your strengths
  • Building your confidence
  • Increasing your understanding and skills
  • Going over work covered in class
  • Support with homework
  • Catching up on work missed
  • Teaching whole topics
  • Focusing on the confusing bits
  • Practical activities
  • Maths games
  • Using online resources
  • Calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
  • Finding the methods that work for you
  • Fractions, decimals, percentages
    • or any other maths topic
  • Problem-solving

  • Working in your head

Don’t Panic!

  • I have worked with students of all ages who were afraid of maths; hence the name “Maths – Don’t Panic!”
  • Increasing your confidence with maths, and lessening the fear, will help you learn more easily as well as making maths lessons more comfortable.
  • Finding out how you learn best, including how you think, can be an important part of this.
  • I have long experience with neurodiversity (including my own), and with specific learning difficulties.
  • Everyone is different so it makes sense that we learn in different ways. There are many reasons for these differences, and many implications for the learning of mathematics.
  • These factors don’t stop you learning maths; we just need to work in the ways that suits you best.
  • If you are an experienced learner and already know the best ways for you to learn, just tell me!
  • If you’re still exploring how you learn, or if you’ve never thought about it before, we can work on this together as part of the tuition.
  • You can find out more about the factors affecting maths learning on the “Neurodiversity” page.
