F.A.Q
If your question does not appear here, you need more information, or you would like to discuss your own situation, please contact me and ask.
How long does a lesson last?
Most tuition sessions are one hour but can be longer if needed.
Where do lessons take place?
I tutor face-to-face at either the student’s home (depending on travelling distance) or in a dedicated room in my house, near Merry Hill Centre, Brierley Hill. I also tutor online, via Zoom.
What precautions are you taking around Covid-19?
I am double-vaccinated and very rigorous around covid safety; I have a lung condition (bronchiectasis) and shielded for several months in 2020.
While teaching face-to-face I wear an FFP3 mask, and ask that students also wear a mask during lessons. For ventilation, tuition will take place with an external door or windows open. Hand sanitiser will be used before and during each session as required.
I take lateral flow tests regularly, including on the morning of every day that I teach face-to-face. I ask that students do the same.
Do you tutor online?
Yes. I started working online during the first coronavirus lockdown in 2020. I use Zoom, BitPaper (collaborative whiteboards) and a variety of resources.
What teaching methods do you use?
I aim to use whatever methods work best for the individual student. This may include practical resources, computer software and paper-based work (textbooks, past exam papers etc). Where appropriate, lessons may include the use of mathematical games and activities as well as more formal teaching methods.
What methods of payment do you accept?
My preference is for bank transfer in advance or on the day of the lesson. Cash at the time of the lesson is also ok when working face-to-face.
What happens if I need to cancel a lesson?
If you need to cancel a lesson in an emergency I will try to rearrange it to a mutually convenient time within a couple of days.
In general, last minute cancellations would be charged for as follows:
Cancellation 24-48 hours before lesson: £15
Less than 24 hours notice: Full cost of lesson.
(This does not apply to cancellations for holidays or other reasons; just let me know in advance which dates you don’t want a lesson. And there is no fee for Covid-related cancellations.)
What happens if one of us needs to self-isolate?
In most cases we could swap to working online for the period of self-isolation. (We might need to change the time of the lesson.) If that isn’t possible or if you don’t want to work online, we would just pause tuition until after the self-isolation period.
I thought the Maths Don’t Panic teacher was called Rachel. Who is Frankie?
I am the same person! For most of my teaching career I have been known as Rachel Griew; I changed my name legally to Frankie in March 2021.
What are your pronouns?
My pronouns are they/them. Thanks for asking!
